COMBINING CONTROLLED TESTING
WITH REAL-LIFE USE TESTING TO OPTIMIZE PROTOTYPE SUCCESS

THE CHALLENGE

To understand consumer input of multiple prototypes and advance a product if it is superior to the control.

OUR SOLUTION

Combine attribute data with real in-home use data.

Design a thorough mixed-methods research study that incorporates quantitative central location testing data alongside insights derived from in-home testing to provide comprehensive understanding of both statistical trends and contextual factors.

THE RESULTS

Spencer Research needed to not only determine the superior product against the control, but also quickly turn around this information to be able to place the top-performing prototype in a home-use test. Respondents were notified, the top-performing prototype was labeled and distributed for further real-life evaluation. This home-use test provided an assessment of alienation and overall performance for the selected prototype, relative to the control, under normal consumer cooking conditions. The combination of controlled findings combined with real-life use test allowed the client to truly understand the product performance and move to market with the most successful prototype.
